Can I renew my passport online?

Yes, if you meet all of the State Department's requirements: your passport is (or was) valid for 10 years and expires within 1 year or expired less than 5 years ago, you are 25 or older, you aren't changing your name or sex, you aren't traveling for at least 6 weeks, you are in a U.S. state or territory, and you have your undamaged passport. You apply only at opr.travel.state.gov, with a digital photo.

What you need

Only one official website

The State Department says the only official place to renew online is opr.travel.state.gov, and that no one else can sign and submit your online application for you. Check that the address ends in .gov.

PicPassed doesn't renew passports. We only make the digital photo: you take it on your phone, it's checked against the State Department's photo rules, and you upload the file to your own application.

Questions

Can I renew my passport online if it has expired?

Yes, if it expired less than 5 years ago and you meet the other requirements.

Can I renew my passport online before it expires?

Yes, if it expires within the next year and you meet the other requirements.

Can I renew my passport online if my name has changed?

No. You can't renew online if you are changing personal information such as your name. You may be able to renew by mail instead.

Can an online renewal be expedited?

No. Online renewals cannot be expedited, so the State Department says to use it only if you aren't traveling for at least 6 weeks.

What happens to my old passport?

It is cancelled once you submit the application, so you can't travel with it. Don't mail it in; keep it. An old passport can still be used as proof of citizenship.

What photo do I need?

A digital photo taken in the last 6 months that follows the passport photo rules: a JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC or HEIF file between 54 KB and 10 MB, never edited.
