Questions

What are the DS-160 photo requirements?

A square JPEG in color, between 600×600 and 1200×1200 pixels, 240 KB or less. Your head must fill 50% to 69% of the height of the picture, on a plain white or off-white background. The photo must be from the last 6 months, with no glasses.

Why does my DS-160 photo upload fail?

Usually because the file is the wrong shape, size or type, or the photo breaks a rule such as background, lighting or head size. Our file is a square 600×600 JPEG under 240 KB, and the photo is checked first. If you see "service unavailable" or error 503, that is the government website having trouble, not your photo.

Can I wear glasses in a U.S. visa photo?

No. Eyeglasses are no longer allowed in new visa photos. The only exception is a rare medical one, such as recent eye surgery, with a statement signed by a medical professional.

Do I need a printed photo as well?

Some embassies and consulates ask you to bring one printed photo to your interview, so check the instructions for the place where you apply. Your PicPassed download includes a print sheet.

Does the DS-160 require a photo?

Yes. The form instructs you to upload a digital photo that meets the U.S. visa photo requirements.

Do you edit or retouch my photo?

No. The U.S. Department of State says not to change your photo with software, apps, filters or artificial intelligence. We only check your photo and crop it to the official size. We never smooth skin, change the background or alter your face.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. Your photo is checked and prepared on your own phone or computer. It is never uploaded to our servers.

How do I print it at CVS, Walgreens or Walmart?

Download the 4×6 print sheet and order it as a normal 4×6 photo print (choose "actual size"). Each sheet has two 2×2 inch photos to cut out. The State Department asks for matte or glossy photo paper.
